Reem Morsi

Ontario

Reem Morsi is an Egyptian/Canadian writer/director based between Toronto & Cairo. She worked as a professional scuba diver and later a human rights officer (women & child protection against violence, sexual exploitation) at the United Nations and other International Organizations around the world in peace & war situations for over a decade. 

Reem’s feature film as a writer/director/producer, “Banned” 2024, is a Telefilm Talent to Watch project with support from the CFC/Netflix Accelerator Program. Morsi directed other feature films such as the action film “The Last Mark”, was included at TIFF selects 2021 & “Queen Tut” 2023, a feature film starring Alexandra Billings (Transparent), was released in 2023 and is currently streaming on Crave.  

Morsi’s feature film script, “Bootleg”, received the Rainin grant/the San Francisco Film Society (2016) & won the Telefilm Canada New Voices Award in 2017 and is currently in final stages of development to be produced in 2025. Bootleg participated at the Berlinale Script Lab 2018 and introduced at the Berlinale Talents Opening Ceremony. Reem also participated at Realness Pan African Screenwriting Residency (Summer 2018) & La Fabrique des Cinemas du Monde – Festival de Cannes and is currently participating at the Torino Feature Comedy Lab 2024 with a final pitch at Torino Film Festival, 2024.

Morsi’s film credits include “Their Feast” (2012 TIFF, BBC, Cine Sud), “Nostalgia” (2015 – WIFTV), The Door (Whistler, 2016 & Best Drama at 2017 Yorkton Film Festival, Audience Choice Award & Best Screenplay at WIFT Showcase 2018), SHOW & TELL (2016-WIFT/BravoFact pitch competition) & won Golden Sheaf Awards for Best Director, Best Short Subject & Best Emerging Director (Yorkton Film Festival, 2017). Reem also won the Canadian National Genre Competition by WIFTV for her series sci/fi genre concept, “Fish” (currently in development). She has two other series in development, one has been optioned and the other has a shopping agreement. 

Morsi has participated at Berlinale Talents & Script Station (2012 & 2018) & TIFF Talent Lab (2016), CFC’s Cineplex Directors’ Lab & WIDC Director’s labs in 2014/2015. Morsi is a recipient of The Academy of Canadian Academy Program for Female Directors, through which she shadowed on The Handmaid’s Tale. She later shadowed on Kim’s Convenience. She also participated at the Warner Media Director’s Program & further at Warner Media Mid-Level Writers’ Program. Reem also directed two episodes of “Virgins!”, a CBC Gem series, including the season finale. She participated in multiple TV writers’ rooms in Canada & Internationally. She’s also currently co-writer on a TV adaptation of a successful Canadian book as well as a writers’ room for an international medical procedural. 

She has also been chosen as a participant of Women in View's 2xMore 2017 Director's Lab, where she shadowed and directed for Sinking Ship Entertainment series “Dino Dana” (TVOKids/Amazon Prime). She has also written/directed an episode of “My Perfect Landing” (Family Channel/Netflix) and directed a number of episodes on TVOKids’ series Fishheads and Leo’s Pollinators.
