Elizabeth Becker

Elizabeth Becker is a Toronto-based director whose bold storytelling and compassionate lens have made her a standout voice in Canadian cinema. An award-winning filmmaker, she has written and directed seven independently produced short films that have screened at international festivals, earning acclaim for their emotional depth and fearless engagement with themes of spirituality, humanity, social justice, and identity.
Elizabeth has carved a unique space as a writer and director in children's and tween drama. Her credits include The Next Step, Lost & Found Music Studios, and My Perfect Landing, where her natural ability to connect with young performers and audiences alike brings emotional honesty and levity to the screen. Whether making audiences laugh or cry, she ensures her sets are places of trust, collaboration, and connection.
Her journey began in factual television at Canada’s YTV, where she built a foundation in journalism as a Host and Segment Producer. There, she created over 25 magazine-style reports covering entertainment, sports, lifestyle, and human-interest stories. Her work on programs like YTV Rocks, Rock nn' Talk, 28:48, Streetnoise, NBA Dunk Street, and YTV News revealed a strong intuitive grasp in human interest and entertainment —skills that continue to inform her dramatic work today.
A graduate of the prestigious Directing Program at the American Film Institute, Elizabeth honed her craft under the mentorship of Hollywood icons Arthur Hiller, John Landau, Rob Bowman, and Roger Corman. Their influence helped shape her distinctive approach.
At the heart of Elizabeth's creative mission is a commitment to awakening audiences' perception. Her current body of work explores the complex realities of Indigenous communities in Canada, illuminating untold stories; particularly the continual impact of systemic neglect, systemic racism, limited access to education, forced assimilation, and the enduring cycle of poverty. She believes film has the power not only to bear witness but to awaken empathy and spark change. Through her lens, the plight of marginalized Aboriginal voices is brought into sharp, human focus—demanding attention, compassion, and, ultimately, action.
